Signing on from Bracebridge, Ontario in the Muskoka region. Cottage country 2hours+ north of Toronto (GTA). Writing from my laptop on a small table in an upstairs room with a partly slanted ceiling -- yes, like a garret. The window is like a live landscape painting of a snowy climb with wintered trees and the potential for deer to wander by and look back in.

It's been almost a month since I last worked on any of my novels -- yes, there is more than one that I started writing in 2009:

1. Hung Out to Dry -- 25,000 words drafted in September during the 3-day novel writing contest held during Labour Day weekend. It's about a young Newfoundland women in the '40s who gets pregnant against her will and ends up whisked away from her community to bear her child in secret, only to find the price she has to pay for her solution might be more than she can bear.
2. Protection -- 30,000 words drafted in November during National Novel Writing Month held every November. It's about a young Ottawa woman who disappears on a roadtrip to Montreal and how her friends try to discover her fate with no clues to follow.

I'm letting Hung Out to Dry 'compost' for a bit as I've sent the first 15 pages into the Humber College Creative Writing Program (Fiction) and got accepted. Since I'll be reviewing it in detail over the first 30 weeks of 2010 with a mentor, I thought it best to wait for the program to begin January 4th.

I thought tonight I would pick up where I left off a month ago with Protection, but I'm struggling to remember what was going to happen next. I think that's because I hadn't quite figured that out yet. Now that I'm back on it and can incubate about the storyline and get to know the characters all over again, I may figure out how it's supposed to go over the next 15o pages.

It'll come. I just have to have faith that it will come.

Part of that break is trying to get back into writing.

I don't have to work tonight so theoretically, I've got lots of time to write, but I'm spent. maybe I just need a break from my workday and then tomorrow I can dig in. Tomorrow is critique group and lunch with fellow nanowrimo writers: Sylvia and Nicole. Then I will be reset and be able to get into the book.

sleepy. want to go to bed early. type out a few words. made progress. that's key.
4,542 words clocked. Just past Tuesday's planned word count. so that makes me one day behind. Not bad. had some work-work to catch up on to make up for being sick last week and away at the a conference the week before.

drinking lots of water and lots of tea. making my way through this bizarre novel I'm creating. it may take me a week before I figure out what it's REALLY about.

Sylvia, almost 3,000 words, I'm blown away at the great progress you've made. And, yes, you were way ahead of me then and you still are. I just had to do homework with Josh and am now back. I'm at 864 words. uh-huh. That's it so far.

I'm about to dive back in!

National Novel Writing Month -- NaNoWriMo -- 2009

The next creative writing challenge has arrived...National Novel Writing Month, which happens to be November. From Nov.1 to Nov.30, the challenge is about quantity, not quality. You must write 175 pgs (that means 12pt font, times new roman, double-spaced, 1in margins) or about 50,000 words. Yes, while it sounds incredibly daunting, it can be done. Out of the typical 100,000 people who attempt this crazy game every year, about 10,000 actually succeed in logging the required word counts.

In fact, once your account is set up on the site, there is a running graphic tally of your output, provided you keep it updated. They will even keep track of entire communities to see how they are doing...I'm associated with Burlington, Toronto and Newfoundland, of course!

So far, two of you are game to join me: Michele and Sylvia...bravo! Hey....just think about the fact that you'll have a substantial first draft of that novel you've always wanted to write. Who knew?
